FLOWERING TIME April–May.
An attractive, medium-sized, deciduous tree with an open-domed crown, usually arising from a straight trunk. The bark is greyish and smooth at first but becomes fissured on older trees. The leaves, up to 15cm long, are pinnately divided into 5–9 ovate, untoothed, leathery, green leaflets in several pairs with a large terminal leaflet. They are reddish when they first appear in spring and become yellow in autumn. The male catkins are yellowish-green, pendulous and up to 15cm long, while the female flowers are small, greenish, in little clusters, and covered with greenish hairs. The fruit is ovoid, shiny, green, fleshy, up to 5cm long and contains the familiar, edible, wrinkled walnut.
HABITAT AND DISTRIBUTION
It is native to south-east Europe and Asia, but widely planted throughout the warmer parts of Europe, in plantations further south, or more casually in the north. It is naturalised except in the far north.
SIMILAR SPECIES
Black Walnut J. nigra from North America is similar, but the leaves are divided into more and smaller leaflets – up to 10 pairs with a small terminal leaflet. The fruits are edible but are rarely used. It is planted in places from Denmark southwards and rarely naturalised.
